Massimo Vignelli publicou um livro em formato pdf disponível para download gratuito, um livro de 96 páginas para uma melhor compreensão da tipografia, segundo o mesmo. Este livro dá-nos detalhes da metodologia por parte de Vignelli aplicado no design gráfico.

Massimo Vignelli has published an amazing 96 page book on better understanding typography in graphic design, according to him. The book gives specific details on Vignelli’s methodology and approach as well as how he decides on paper sizes, typefaces and other tangibles. There is also a nice section on grids. The book is available for free online in PDF format

Foi posto recentemente no site Experimental Jetset os mais recentes trabalhos desta equipa de designers. Baseiam-se muito em objectos gráficos modernistas como poderão ver quando visitarem o site. Para quem adora, vai precisar de um babete.

It was recently posted in Experimental Jeset the most recent work of this team of desgners. They focus a lot in modernist graphics as you will see if you visit the site. For the ones who love, you will need a bib.

O tipo Arno Pro, é o mais recente e o topo dos kerning pairs. Acima, podemos ver o ‘A’ e o ‘r’ e o ‘Pro’ com o o seu par corrigido automaticamente, mas, e o ‘n’ e o ‘o’? Estão um bocado afastados para aquilo que o tipo foi desenhado… Até por azar, tinham de cometer este erro no nome do tipo. Eu sei que cada designer deverá ser ele próprio a ter em atenção a medida ‘kerning’, cada um deverá ter a sensibilidade para corrigir o mau espaço entre caractéres. Aqui, supostamente, com um tipo de letra Pro, deveria pelo menos ter todos o caractéres corrigidos, e aí sim, depois cada um decidia o que fazer depois. 

The Arno Pro typeface, is the most recent and the top of kerning pairs. In the image above, we can see ’A', ‘r’ and ‘Pro’, with is pair automatically corrected, mas what anout the ‘n’ and ‘o’? They are a bit away of each other for that what this type was designed. Bad luck for them, they even made the mistake of fail that in name of the type. I know that ever designer should be himself having the attention to the kerning, each one should have the sensibility  to correct the bad space between each caracter. Here, supposedly, with a Pro typeface, should, at least, have their kerning pairs corrected, and then, each designer would decide what to do after.

Nesta imagem predomina o excesso espaço em branco certo? Mas esse espaço branco não é mais valorizado que a parte roxa certo? Pois bem, é que o espaço vazio valoriza sempre o espaço preenchido. Depende também muito daquilo que estamos a projectar, mas a ideia que tento dar é que com tanto espaço vazio o conteúdo é valorizado, isto porque o nosso olhar é puxado para ele, ainda por cima uma forma geométrica pura e com cor, o nosso cérebro é ‘seduzido’ quase sempre por uma delas, mas as duas coisas juntas mais o é… Não é necessário ter muito espaço vazio, esse espaço deverá ter aquilo que um aparelho muito bom terá que ter em conta, o ‘olhómetro’; como apresenta também a figura abaixo:

In this image, its all about blank space, right? But, this blank space is no more important than the purple zone, right? Well, that’s because the blank space gives more value to filled space. Depends also on what we are projecting, but the main idea I try to explain is that with a great amount of white space the content is valorized, this happens because our eyes are pulled to this filled space, on the top of that, that is a geometrical and colored shape, our brain is ‘seduced’ by geometrical shapes and colors, but ist even more when we have the two together. It’s not necessary to have too mauch of empty space, that space should be what a really good gadget can tell us: the ‘eyemeter’; just how the image below shows:

Como dizia-mos acima, esta imagem já apresenta pouco espaço vazio, ainda assim, o suficiente para dar evidência ao conteúdo. Este tipo de resolução serve tanto para tipografia, design editorial (livros, revistas etc…).

As we were saying above, this image presents less blank space, nevertheless, its just enough to give evidence to the content. This type of solution is good such for typography, book, magazine  design etc…
